Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla, who was contesting the Democratic primary for the State Assembly in New Jersey’s 32nd Legislative District, has declared his victory against incumbent Assemblywoman Jessica Ramirez on June 11.
“Thank you Hoboken & Jersey City! We truly did it! For now all I will simply say is I am deeply honored to be your Democratic Party nominee — along with Katie Brennan — for Assembly! We look forward to working hand in hand with fellow Democrats to secure victory in November.”, Bhalla wrote on his X.

According to the New Jersey Globe, Bhalla received 7,012 votes to Ramirez’s 6,833 — winning by a slim margin of 179 votes — in the 32nd Legislative District encompassing Hoboken and parts of Jersey City. However with more ballots still to be counted AP has not called this race, which is touted as one of the state’s closest races.
Katie Brennan, a former Murphy administration official and urban planner, led the race overall with 7,319 votes taking one the district’s two seats. She and Bhalla ran on a joint ticket, while Ramirez and her running mate, Jersey City Councilman Yousef Saleh, were aligned with gubernatorial hopeful and Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop.
Saleh also garnered 6,833 votes. Behind them were Hudson County Democratic Organization-backed candidates Jennie Pu (5,496), director of the Hoboken Public Library, and Crystal Fonseca (5,257), a former Newark school board member.
Bhalla, the city’s first Sikh mayor and a prominent figure in Hudson County politics, had previously run unsuccessfully for Assembly in 2011 and withdrew from the race in 2013. In 2024, he challenged U.S. Representative Rob Menendez in a Democratic primary, losing the overall race but carrying the 32nd district by a wide margin.
