Communities affected by school shootings in the United States experience significant economic fallout, with local spending declining by millions of dollars in the months that follow, according to new research from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
The study, led by Adithya Pattabhiramaiah, an Indian-origin professor of marketing at Georgia Tech’s Scheller College of Business, found that consumer activity in communities hit by school shootings falls sharply for at least six months after the event. The research estimates a cumulative loss of $5.4 million in local economic activity during that period.
