Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Apr.28 congratulated Kamla Persad-Bissessar on her victory in Trinidad and Tobago’s general election, noting the deep-rooted historical and familial bonds between the two nations.
“Heartiest congratulations @MPKamla on your victory in the elections. We cherish our historically close and familial ties with Trinidad and Tobago. I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our partnership for shared prosperity and well-being of our people,” the Prime Minister wrote in a post on X.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar, 73, who is of Indian origin, is the leader of the United National Congress (UNC). She previously served as Prime Minister from 2010 to 2015, becoming the country’s first woman to hold the office.
Her return to political leadership follows the UNC’s victory over the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) in the 2025 general election.
According to Trinidad and Tobago Newsday, the UNC secured the win by 10:10 p.m. on Apr.28, defeating the centre-left PNM, which had won the last two elections.
