Dr. Simranpal Deol, a family medicine physician of Indian origin who died in a car crash in November 2024, has been named the first recipient of the Dr. Barbara Wolf Humanitarian Award, McLaren Flint Graduate Medical Education announced at its June 2025 commencement ceremony.

The award, created in memory of longtime McLaren psychologist and educator Dr. Barbara Wolf, honors graduating residents or fellows who demonstrate compassion, community service, and advocacy for vulnerable populations. Dr. Deol’s colleagues accepted the award on his behalf.

Dr. Deol was recognized for his dedication to patient-centered care and his efforts to serve Flint’s underserved communities. Among his contributions was organizing an annual holiday gift drive for children, which will now continue as the Dr. Simran Deol Holiday Gift Drive.

“Dr. Deol was known for his unwavering commitment to patient care, deep empathy, and ability to bring comfort and healing,” his peers told McLaren Flint. “He demonstrated a great devotion to patient-centered care, community health, and mentorship. Throughout his residency, colleagues remember him as an inspiring team member, a great physician, an advocate for the underserved, and an amazing listener.”

The award’s namesake, Dr. Barbara Wolf, spent nearly three decades as a clinical health psychologist at McLaren. She was widely respected for advancing physician wellness and mentoring generations of medical trainees. Dr. Wolf died in late 2024 during an act of violence while assisting someone in distress.

“It would be an incredible task to begin quantifying the impact Dr. Barbara Wolf had on our organization and on those of us who worked closely with her and had the honor to call her our friend,” said Dr. Justin Klamerus, executive vice president and chief clinical officer at McLaren Health Care. “Barbara brought heart and passion to her advocacy initiatives, and she cared deeply. She had a way of making everyone feel valued, and while her presence will be fiercely missed, we are delighted that this recognition will help share her essence.”

In addition to the award, McLaren Flint has re-dedicated its health psychology residency program in Wolf’s name.
