The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA-Chicago), in partnership with the Indian Community of Niles Township (ICNT), kicked off its series of Independence Day celebrations with a vibrant display of civic unity on July 4.
The day began with a flag hoisting ceremony at Shree Jalaram Mandir in Illinois, where families, local leaders, and community members gathered to honor shared democratic values and the spirit of freedom.
Later, FIA-Chicago and ICNT joined the Skokie Independence Day Parade, waving U.S. flags and carrying banners to mark America’s founding and highlight the enduring democratic bond between India and the United States.

“Freedom was not free. July 4th should be celebrated with two emotions—joy for our freedom and gratitude for the sacrifices behind it. Forgetting them risks losing it. We must stay vigilant and protect the world’s oldest and largest democracies—America and India,” FIA-Chicago president Hemant Patel said.
The July 4 events mark the beginning of a larger celebration leading upto India’s 78th Independence Day on Aug. 15. Upcoming activities include a Summer Picnic on July 27, the Bharat Parade in Naperville on August 10, amongst others.
