Cal State LA recognizes Devika Hazra as Outstanding Professor

She was recognized for her excellence in teaching, impactful research on inequality and gender-based violence, and dedicated service to the community.

California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) has honored Indian-American professor Devika Hazra with the university’s Outstanding Professor Award, recognizing her contributions in teaching, research, and community engagement. 

Hazra, a professor of economics and statistics in the College of Business and Economics, is widely known for her research on gender-based violence, economic inequality, and structural injustice. Her interdisciplinary work, supported by organizations such as the Haynes Foundation, Gates Foundation, and Bank of America, employs both quantitative and qualitative methods to address urgent social and economic challenges affecting marginalized communities.

A dedicated educator, Hazra teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, monetary policy, and development economics. She is recognized for advancing inclusive and career-focused instruction and for mentoring students both at Cal State LA and nationally through the American Economic Association’s Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession.

Her leadership extends across the university, where she serves as vice chair of the Academic Senate and has led initiatives such as the Financial Fitness Program and the Gateway to Employment project. She has also contributed as research coordinator for the college and as a faculty fellow of the Center for Effective Teaching and Learning.

She volunteers as a certified domestic violence counselor, collaborates with nonprofits addressing women’s safety, and serves as a mediator with the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office’s Neighborhood Justice Panel.

Hazra earned her Ph.D. in economics from Texas A&M University, M.Sc. and B.Sc. from the University of Calcutta, India. 

The honor was presented during the University Convocation and Investiture, which also marked the formal investiture of President Berenecea Johnson Eanes as Cal State LA’s ninth president.
