Bernie Sanders endorses Zohran Mamdani for NYC mayor
The endorsement marks Sanders’ first intervention in a New York City mayoral primary and adds significant weight to Mamdani’s surging grassroots campaign.

Senator Bernie Sanders on June 17 endorsed Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in New York City’s mayoral race, calling him the candidate best suited to lead with bold ideas during a time of crisis.
“We need new leadership that is prepared to stand up to powerful corporate interests and fight for the working class,” Sanders said in a statement on X. “At this dangerous moment in history, status quo politics isn’t good enough. Zohran Mamdani is providing that vision. He is the best choice for NYC mayor.”

“Our nation faces a fundamental choice: Will we continue with a corporate-dominated politics driven by billionaires or will we build a grass-roots movement fueled by everyday people, committed to fighting oligarchy, authoritarianism and kleptocracy?” Sanders said in a statement as quoted by the New York Times.
In response to Sanders' endorsement, Mamdani said, “As Mayor, I will strive each and every day to live up to Senator Sanders' example, making New York affordable and hopefully making Brooklyn’s own proud.”

The 33-year-old Queens assemblyman, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has built his campaign around a transformative platform that includes constructing 200,000 new affordable housing units, implementing a citywide rent freeze, offering free public bus service, creating city-owned grocery stores, investing in universal child care, and raising the minimum wage.
“Because of you, we’ve raised $8 million and knocked on over 600,000 doors. We are this close to making this city’s first South Asian mayor,” Indian American filmmaker Mira Nair’s son, Mamdani said. “But it’s not about what I will become — it’s about what I will do.”

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also endorsed Mamdani earlier this month and has campaigned with him at rallies across the city. She urged voters to rank him first under New York City's ranked-choice voting system. Mamdani, in turn, has encouraged his supporters to list Comptroller Brad Lander and former Assemblyman Michael Blake as their second and third choices to strengthen the progressive coalition.
The Marist Institute for Public Opinion found in a survey released on June 18 that 38 percent of likely voters planned to rank Cuomo first on their ballots, compared with 27 percent for Mamdani.
Cuomo, who entered the race in a political comeback bid following his 2021 resignation, has received high-profile endorsements from former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Governor David Paterson.
Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, elected as a Democrat in 2021, is bypassing the primary and running for reelection as an independent.
