The University of Texas at Dallas’ Comet Cricket Club clinched the National College Cricket Association championship title last month.
The club won by defeating the University of Florida by 40 runs in the final match. The win capped off an undefeated tournament run for the team, which competed against 31 other colleges and universities.

“We were quite confident on winning the cup this time,” said club president Sathvik Reddy Bellamkonda, a graduate student in business analytics. “UTD has become a competitive club that plays in most of the major college cricket leagues around.”
The office of development and alumni relations sponsored the team’s participation in the tournament. Kyle Edgington, vice president for development and alumni relations, said supporting cricket reflects the university’s commitment to its large international student population.
“Cricket is the most popular sport in India, as well as in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. UT Dallas has one of the largest, if not the largest, Indian student associations in the country. They’re very active and do a lot of events,” he said. .
Club captain Firasuddin Syed, also a business analytics graduate student, said the club fosters friendships and community among international students. “Each and every tournament that we play, each and every event that happens, we just try to expand our community, and we hope for the best recognition that we can get.”
Although the club is not officially part of University Recreation’s club sports program, it boasts hundreds of members and plays year-round. Many players balance academics, jobs and other obligations while attending late-night practices at off-campus locations.
