Tsunami in US West Coast: Indian consulates issue advisories

Local authorities in multiple parts of the country have ordered evacuation.

Indian Consulates in the US have echoed advisories and warnings issued by The National Weather Service of the USA about likely tsunami waves hitting Hawaii, Alaska, and the U.S. West Coast on July 30.

Waves may reach places like California, Washington, and Oregon. The first waves are expected to hit by 11:50 PM PDT and the waves will last for 10-36 hours after the initial hit.

A powerful 8.8 earthquake near Russia has triggered the alert and the evacuation orders stretching across Japan, the US west coast and parts of the Pacific, after the shallow quake hit near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30.

Reacting to the news, the Consulate General of India in Seattle posted on X, "National Weather Service USA has issued Tsunami Advisories along parts of the U.S. West Coast, including areas in Oregon, Washington and Alaska."

It added, "Indian citizens in these areas are advised to follow advisories issued by local government authorities and take necessary precautions to ensure safety."

The Consulate General of India in San Francisco also issued warnings about the tsunami on X. It said that it is "monitoring the potential tsunami threat".

The consulate also advised Indians to follow local alerts, move to higher ground if asked, avoid coastal areas, prepare for emergencies and keep devices charged.
