Two Indian Americans, Dr. Sukh Kaur and Sanjay Singhal, have won their respective city council runoff races in Texas, securing seats in San Antonio and Sugar Land.

Dr. Sukh Kaur, a Sikh American and the first South Asian to serve on the San Antonio City Council, won re-election to represent District 1 after defeating challenger Patty Gibbons in the June 7 runoff.

Kaur was first elected in 2023. Her campaign emphasized improving basic infrastructure, preventing displacement, supporting small businesses, and enhancing neighborhood safety. According to her campaign website, she remains focused on “a local government that prioritizes those who need it most”.

Kaur wrote on her campaign site: “My family immigrated from India when I was young, and like so many other immigrant families, we moved in search of the American Dream.”

She recalled her early experiences of discrimination after 9/11 and said they pushed her to work in social justice. A Rice University alumna, Kaur spent 16 years in public education and now runs a nonprofit, EDreimagined, that helps launch innovative school models.

“I am running for re-election to continue advocating for District 1's diverse needs,” she said. “District 1 is the corazon (heart) of San Antonio, and I will keep working to make it a world class city for ALL.”

In Sugar Land, retired energy executive and IIT Delhi graduate Sanjay Singhal defeated fellow Indian American Nasir Hussain to win the District 2 council seat.

Singhal campaigned on a message of sustainable growth, civic transparency, and public safety. His campaign website described him as a “proven leader” in the Telfair Homeowners Association and a strong opponent of a local gas power plant project.

Following his win, Singhal said in a statement, “I am deeply honored and grateful to have earned the trust of District 2 residents to serve as your next City Councilmember.”

He also thanked his family, campaign supporters, and community organizations, adding, “This victory belongs to all of us.”

“Now, it's time to come together — to put aside our differences — and focus on the work ahead,” Singhal said. “I look forward to collaborating with the new Mayor and City Council to build an efficient, more inclusive and resident-focused Sugar Land for everyone.”
