Shrewsbury School UK in collaboration with Jagran Social Welfare Society recently inaugurated the Shrewsbury International School India in Bhopal.
The prestigious 473-year-old British school, founded in 1552 by King Edward VI, is one of the UK's oldest and most prestigious independent boarding schools. It is renowned for its academic excellence, historic traditions, and notable alumni, including Charles Darwin.
The 150-acre Bhopal campus is the first South-Asian campus of Shrewsbury School UK. The occasion also marked a historic milestone for the Shrewsbury family of schools as this is the first fully residential campus outside the United Kingdom.

The inauguration was attended by Carla Howarth, Chair of the Advisory Board of Governors at Shrewsbury International School India and Chair of the International Development Committee at Shrewsbury School UK along with Tim Haynes, Former Chair of The Board of Governors at Shrewsbury School UK and Member of the Advisory Board of Governors at Shrewsbury International School India.
India's Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Hari Mohan Gupta, Chairman of Jagran Welfare Society and Abhishek Mohan Gupta, President – Board of Management at Shrewsbury International School India also attended the event.
Howarth expressed joy over Shrewsbury schools' latest venture and said, "It is truly rewarding to see the timeless Salopian virtues - rooted in Shrewsbury’s heritage - become part of the educational journey in India.
She further added, "The inauguration of our first fully residential campus outside the UK is a milestone moment for the global Shrewsbury family."
Echoing similar sentiments, Hari Mohan Gupta, Chairman of Jagran Welfare Society, added, “At Shrewsbury India, we aspire to empower the next generation of innovators and thought leaders - individuals who will lead with purpose, conquer academic challenges and contribute meaningfully to society.”
The institute introduces India’s first on-campus training facilities for indoor rowing, fencing and scuba diving - alongside 20 indoor and outdoor sports options. It is also collaborating with Trinity College, London to offer internationally recognised diplomas in Music, Speech and Drama.
