New York State Senator John Liu issued a statement congratulating Zohran Mamdani and highlighting the support Mamdani received from New York's Asian-American voters.
Liu is a prominent Democratic figure known for his progressive stance on education, housing, and public safety. Previously New York City Comptroller and a City Council member, he endorsed Zohran Mamdani for mayor in 2025, highlighting their shared commitment to affordability and equity despite some policy differences.
Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and New York State Assemblymember, has emerged as the presumptive Democratic nominee for New York City mayor in the 2025 election, following a surprising victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the June 24, primary.
Mamdani’s progressive platform, including free city buses, rent freezes, public child care, and city-owned grocery stores, has galvanized young and working-class voters, though it has drawn criticism for being overly ambitious. Mamdani’s campaign, backed by figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, reflects a shift toward bold, grassroots-driven politics in New York City.

Liu, in a statement, said, “Yesterday, New York City’s Asian community made a huge impact in a historic primary election. Asian communities in Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan turned out in droves to support Zohran Mamdani’s refreshing vision for the future of New York City."
Highlighting Mamdani's deep connect with the community, he said, "Zohran’s come-from-behind victory was bolstered by a surge of Asian support who were encouraged by his ability to connect to people, not by talking at them, but by listening to them, and communicating new ideas about how to improve our city for everyone. He created a movement that vocalized the concerns of everyday New Yorkers into an exciting policy platform rooted in optimism that NYC has been missing for far too long."
Liu added, “His victory, alongside Civil Court judge triumphs from Sheridan Chu and Eve Cho Guillergan, demonstrates the growing political power and engagement of our community. I was proud to support Zohran, Eve, and Sheridan early on, and am exceedingly proud to note that the Asian American community, when inspired, mobilized, and empowered, can turn the tide in the most competitive races.”
Mamdani also received congratulatory messages from the likes of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and United States Senator Bernie Sanders.

However, many Republicans were vocal in their disapproval of Mamdani’s win. Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, calling Mamdani a "100% Communist Lunatic" and criticizing his appearance, voice, and intelligence.
