Omkar Tasgaonkar, a recent Indian-origin graduate of Valley Christian High School in San Jose, California, has led his team, Wildfire Quest, to the semifinals of the global XPRIZE Wildfire competition. The team is the only high school group among the Top 15 semifinalists in the $11 million XPRIZE Wildfire competition, competing alongside university researchers, private companies, and international technology developers.

The group, which includes Vishnu Parthasarathy, Jaylyn Chong, Rohit Mekkoth, Aarna Nair, among a total of 19 students will now prepare for real-world field testing of their autonomous wildfire response system this fall. Their work builds on an earlier achievement, when they became the only high school team to reach the Top 30 and received $25,000 during the Technical Verification round.
