Indian American poet Dr Satyapal Anand passes away in Canada

A professor of Comparative Literature, he taught at Panjab University before migrating to USA.

Renowned poet and writer Prof. Satyapal Anand passed away on Aug. 2, in Canada at the age of 94.

Dr. Anand, a revered academic who has taught at prestigious institutions across the globe, was born in Kot Sarang, modern-day Pakistan.  

A truly global career academician, Dr. Anand has taught at Panjab University in India, the University of the District of Columbia in USA, the University of British Columbia in Canada and the Open University in Britain.

After moving to the USA from India, he gained recognition as an Indian-American poet, critic, and comparative literature professor.

He left behind a multilingual body of work in Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and English, encompassing poetry, fiction, and critical essays.

His verses, rich with philosophical and metaphysical reflections, often explored historical and civilizational themes. He played a key role in modernizing Urdu poetry, experimenting with free verse and blank verse in the nazm tradition.

Known for his engaging lectures on literature, philosophy, and interfaith dialogue, Dr. Anand was a noted presence at international mushairas and literary conferences around the world, including regular appearances at the Washington-DC Aligarh Alumni Association’s annual international mushaira.

Over the years, his contributions were recognized with numerous literary honors in India, Pakistan, Canada, and the U.S.
