The Indian government announced on May 17 that an all-party delegation comprising 59 Members of Parliament will travel to over 30 countries beginning May 22 and 23. The global outreach, dubbed as a part of Operation Sindoor, is aimed at rallying international support against terrorism, particularly in light of the Apr.22 Pahalgam terror attack.
The initiative brings together members from across the political spectrum, a move described by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju as “a powerful reflection of national unity above politics.” Delegation includes leaders from the BJP, Congress, Shiv Sena (both factions), NCP (SP), DMK, JD(U), and even the AIMIM and CPI(M).
“These delegations represent India’s national consensus and its zero-tolerance approach to terrorism,” the government said in a statement. Each delegation will include a diplomat and a liaison officer.
Of the seven delegations, three will be led by opposition leaders: Shashi Tharoor (Congress), Supriya Sule (NCP–Sharad Pawar), and Kanimozhi (DMK). The others will be headed by BJP’s Ravi Shankar Prasad and Baijayant Panda, JD(U)’s Sanjay Kumar Jha, and Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde.
The delegations will meet representatives from governments in North and South America, Europe, West Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America — including four of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, excluding China.
Shashi Tharoor’s delegation will visit the United States, Panama, Guyana, Brazil, and Colombia. The team includes BJP MPs Tejasvi Surya and Shashank Mani Tripathi, Shiv Sena’s Milind Deora, and JMM’s Sarfaraz Ahmed.
Ravi Shankar Prasad will lead another team to Europe, including stops in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Denmark. His team features Congress MP Amar Singh and Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Priyanka Chaturvedi. TMC’s Sudip Bandyopadhyay was also invited but declined the trip, citing health issues.
Kanimozhi’s delegation is scheduled to visit Russia, Spain, Greece, Slovenia, and Latvia. Supriya Sule’s team will head to South Africa, Qatar, Egypt, and Ethiopia, and includes Congress leaders Anand Sharma and Manish Tewari, along with Union Minister Anurag Thakur.
Sanjay Kumar Jha of the JD(U) will lead a delegation to East and Southeast Asia — Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. CPI(M) MP John Brittas is among the members of that team.
Shrikant Shinde’s delegation will visit the UAE, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sierra Leone.
Baijayant Panda will lead a team to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Algeria. The delegation includes BJP’s Nishikant Dubey and AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi.
“This is a moment for India to speak in one voice to the world,” said Rijiju. "One mission, one message, one Bharat."
