India on Aug. 6 condemned Washington’s decision to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent in retaliation for New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil, warning the move could wipe out billions in exports and strain the countries’ strategic ties.
The Ministry of External Affairs called the measure “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable” and accused the United States and Europe of double standards. “Our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people,” it said.
