Indian-origin UCLA researcher awarded $3.5 million NIH grant to study mpox virus

Dr. Arumugaswami’s team is especially focused on creating antiviral drugs, which he said are “another essential tool, for people already infected”.

A UCLA-led team led by Indian-origin researcher Dr. Vaithilingaraja Arumugaswami has been awarded a $3.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to advance treatment and understanding of mpox, a viral disease formerly known as monkeypox. The five-year grant was announced on July 2 by the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA.

Arumugaswami, who is originally from Tamil Nadu, is a professor of molecular and medical pharmacology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. The research team also includes co-principal investigator Dr. Ashok Kumar of Wayne State University and UCLA’s Dr. Robert Damoiseaux, director of the Molecular Screening Shared Resource.
