The University of Miami board of trustees has unanimously appointed Indian-origin health expert Dipen J. Parekh as the chief executive officer of the University of Miami Health System (UHealth) and executive vice president for health affairs at the University.
A globally acclaimed urologic oncologist and academic leader, Parekh has served as UHealth’s chief operating officer since 2020, playing a central role in its transformation into one of the nation’s top academic medical centers.

His leadership, alongside University president Joseph J. Echevarria, has been widely credited with UHealth’s financial and operational resurgence over the past five years. “He understands the mission—from the operating room to the classroom to the boardroom—and he embodies the excellence we strive to deliver for our patients, students and community,” president Echevarria said.
Commenting on his elevated role, Parekh said, “I am profoundly grateful for the trust placed in me and energized by the opportunity to advance our shared mission of delivering world-class care, pioneering research and transformative education.”
Stuart Miller, chair of the UHealth board of directors, emphasized Parekh’s exceptional qualifications, citing his academic pedigree, leadership skills, and impact as a practicing surgeon-scientist.
“Dipen will leverage his considerable skills and credibility as a surgeon, clinical leader and NCI-funded scientist with more than 200 peer-reviewed publications to lead the stellar faculty and clinicians at South Florida’s only academic health system, and to enhance our critical community partnership with Jackson Health System,” Miller added.
Since joining the University of Miami in 2012 as chair of urology, Parekh has held several leadership roles, including executive dean for clinical affairs and founding director of the Desai Sethi Urology Institute. He has conducted groundbreaking research, including a landmark 2018 Lancet study on robotic bladder cancer surgery, and has performed over 6,000 robotic procedures.
Honored by Becker’s Hospital Review as a top academic health system COO in 2024, Parekh is also a member of the Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine of Florida.
