Stony Brook University assistant professor Prateek Prasanna was awarded the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award for his pioneering research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and medical imaging.
Prasanna, a faculty member in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, received the award for his project titled “CAREER: Towards Gaze-guided Medical Image Analysis.” The project explores how eye gaze data—capturing how clinicians interpret medical scans—can guide the development of more accurate and interpretable machine learning systems for diagnostic use in radiology and digital pathology.

“I’m thrilled to receive the NSF CAREER award to advance AI for medical image interpretation. This support will help us build models that learn from the way expert clinicians see, think, and reason,” said Prasanna.
The award recognizes both research and education excellence. As part of the grant, Prasanna will mentor trainees through hands-on research and coursework and lead the development of the Radiology Informatics Microcredential Program at Stony Brook. The program aims to equip students with interdisciplinary skills at the intersection of engineering and clinical practice.
Prasanna directs the Imaging Informatics for Precision Medicine (IMAGINE) Lab, which develops machine learning tools that combine imaging, pathology, and genomic data to improve clinical decision-making. His team’s work emphasizes explainable AI and computational biomarkers in data-scarce settings, with applications across oncology and other domains.
“This award recognizes Prasanna’s promise as a leader in integrating cutting-edge research with transformative education in biomedical informatics and AI-driven healthcare solutions,” said Joel Saltz, founding chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics.
Prasanna earned his PhD from Case Western Reserve University, MS from Rutgers University, and BTech from the National Institute of Technology in Calicut, India.
