Arjun Gupte and Ishaan Singh, two Indian-origin students at Purdue University, have been named 2025 Astronaut Scholars by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF), one of the nation’s most competitive merit-based awards for undergraduates in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
Gupte, a senior majoring in computer engineering in the College of Engineering, received a scholarship sponsored by Jim Hays in memory of astronaut Gene Cernan. Singh, a junior pursuing applied physics honors and biochemistry in the College of Science and the John Martinson Honors College, was selected for the scholarship sponsored by Marc and Sharon Hagle.
They are joined by Zhiyuan Chen, a junior majoring in biological engineering and biochemistry in Purdue’s colleges of Engineering and Agriculture. Chen's scholarship was sponsored by Dick and Kathleen Covey and the CoveyLove Legacy Fund.
The three are among 74 students selected nationwide from 51 colleges and universities. Each will receive up to $15,000 in financial support, along with access to mentorship, professional networking, and a seat at the ASF Innovators Symposium & Gala in Houston this August.
Purdue has been a participating institution in the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation since 1987, receiving annual recognition for its continued strength in STEM education and its ties to space exploration.
The ASF was established in 1984 by the six surviving members of NASA’s Mercury 7. While rooted in aerospace, the foundation supports students pursuing a broad range of STEM fields. Since its founding, ASF has awarded more than $10 million in scholarships to over 900 students across the country.
