Amar Subramanya, an Indian-origin AI research scientist and former Head of Engineering for Google’s Gemini chatbot, has joined Microsoft as Corporate Vice President of AI. His move, after a 16-year career at Google, marks another high-profile hire as Microsoft accelerates its push into AI.
Subramanya announced the transition in a LinkedIn post, writing, “Super excited to share that I’ve started a new position as Corporate VP, AI at Microsoft AI.” He added, “Just one week into my new role, I’m already feeling deeply energized. The culture here is refreshingly low ego yet bursting with ambition.”
The comment about Microsoft’s “refreshingly low ego” work environment sparked speculation online, with some seeing it as a pointed contrast to Google. One user on X wrote, “Throwing shade at Google where he was just one week ago, for 16 years?”
Subramanya described Microsoft’s work culture as “fast-moving, collaborative, and deeply focused on building truly innovative, state-of-the-art foundation models to drive delightful AI-powered products such as Microsoft Copilot.” He also pointed to “inspiring” conversations with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman as key to his decision to join the company.
His hiring is part of a broader trend. Subramanya’s move highlights the intensifying competition between the two tech giants as they develop rival AI platforms—Microsoft’s Copilot and Google’s Gemini.
Subramanya holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Bangalore University and is widely recognized for his contributions to large-scale machine learning and AI systems.
