Dr. Vivek Murthy, Indian American and former U.S. Surgeon General, has launched The Together Project, a national initiative to tackle loneliness and social disconnection in the United States. Announced in Miami on July 28, 2025, the effort is backed by funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Murthy, who served as the 19th and 21st Surgeon General, will lead the project as its chair. The initiative builds on his longstanding focus on the health effects of isolation, a topic he explored in his 2020 book ‘Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World’.
