The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has fully backed India’s efforts to fight terrorism, saying his country will do everything to “support those efforts.”

At a Congressional briefing at Capitol Hill, Johnson said in reference to the Pahalgam violence by Pakistan-backed terrorists that killed 26 Indians on April 22: “Look we have great sympathy for what’s happening there. And we want to stand with our allies. India is an important partner to us in so many ways.”

He said the support of the U.S. for the fight against terrorism would be unwavering: “We want to stand with our allies. India is a very important partner to us in so many ways. India has to stand against terrorism as well. I think that's all part of this relationship as it develops.”

Referring to the importance of India as a partner, the Speaker said, “The Trump administration clearly understands the importance of that relationship and clearly understands the importance of the threat of terrorism.”

He said he believed that if the threat to India has increased, the U.S. would focus “more energy, resources and time” in dealing with any situation.

President Donald Trump was among the first world leaders to call Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the Pahalgam attack. American Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are regularly in touch with their Indian counterparts to avoid escalation of India-Pakistan tensions in the aftermath of the violence.
