Mumbai born artist in Berkeley explores museum accessibility

Her installation, titled b. Call in sick, draws on Berkeley’s legacy of free speech and disability activism to question how museums and institutions exclude disabled bodies.

Priyanka D’Souza, an Indian-origin artist graduating with a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Berkeley, is one of six MFA students who presented their thesis work at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) on May 14. Her installation, titled b. Call in sick, draws on Berkeley’s legacy of free speech and disability activism to question how museums and institutions exclude disabled bodies.

In an interview with UC Berkeley News, D’Souza said, “Everyone needs and deserves rest,” describing how she deliberately designed the seating in her installation to change the viewer’s engagement with the artwork. “Your attention to the work is different if you’re sitting instead of standing.”
