The Sikh Coalition has welcomed Manpreet Kaur as its new Education Director, effective May 2025. In this role, Kaur will lead the organization’s national strategy to foster a generational shift in Sikh awareness and create safer, more inclusive school environments for all students.

Her work includes advancing efforts to integrate accurate Sikh representation in state education standards and curricula, creating lesson plans and instructional materials for educators, supporting professional development across all grade levels, and empowering Sikh students and parents to advocate for inclusive education.

A proud native of California’s Central Valley, Manpreet Kaur was born and raised in Bakersfield and is a graduate of the local public school system. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, with a minor in Law and Society, from UC San Diego. She holds two Master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison—one in Urban and Regional Planning and the other in Public Affairs.

In 2016, Manpreet Kaur founded the Kern County chapter of the Jakara Movement, a grassroots youth leadership organization focused on the health and empowerment of Punjabi Sikh communities in the Central Valley. Under her leadership, the movement expanded to 70 high school clubs and 25 college chapters across 15 counties in California. The organization engages Sikh youth with issues such as heritage, gender equality, education, and civic leadership.

In 2022, she made history as the first Sikh Punjabi woman elected to the Bakersfield City Council, becoming the first to serve in a leadership role in one of California’s ten largest cities. She currently serves as the city’s Vice Mayor.

Outside of her professional work, Kaur is passionate about equitable urban design and reimagining the built environment to serve all communities more fairly.
