Indian-origin professor receives Regents’ distinction

Aluru also serves as the Executive Director of the Georgia Tech Interdisciplinary Research Institute (IRI) in Data Engineering and Science (IDEaS).

The University System of Georgia (USG) Board of Regents has announced 12 individuals from the Georgia Institute of Technology who have received Regents' distinctions for the first time in 2023. Among them is Indian-origin professor Srinivas Aluru, from the School of Computational Science and Engineering within the College of Computing at Georgia Tech.

Apart from his role as a professor, Aluru also serves as the executive director of the Georgia Tech Interdisciplinary Research Institute (IRI) in Data Engineering and Science (IDEaS). He is a co-leader of the NSF South Big Data Regional Innovation Hub, which fosters collaborations and partnerships related to big data among organizations in the 16 Southern States and Washington D.C. Additionally, he is involved with the NSF Transdisciplinary Research Institute for Advancing Data Science.

Before joining Georgia Tech, Aluru held various faculty positions at institutions such as Iowa State University, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, New Mexico State University, and Syracuse University. During his 14 years at Iowa State University, he occupied pivotal roles like the Ross Martin Mehl and Marylyne Munas Mehl endowed professorship and the Richard Stanley Chair in Interdisciplinary Engineering in the College of Engineering.

Aluru has been honoured as a Fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He has received several prestigious awards, including the NSF Career Award in 1997, the IBM faculty award in 2002, and the Swarnajayanti fellowship from the Government of India in 2007.
