Indian law currently permits women to end a pregnancy under certain conditions with the consent of a licensed medical professional.

Abortion is legal - typically up to 20 weeks of gestation, though abortion is permitted later in exceptional circumstances - if a woman's life or health is in grave danger, there is a high risk that the unborn child will have physical or mental abnormalities, or if the pregnancy is the result of rape or failed contraceptives.
