Uttar Pradesh, USAID launch Initiative to Increase tree coverage in the state

Trees Outside Forests in India (TOFI) is a five-year joint initiative by the USAID and the MoEFCC of the Government of India to expanding tree covered area outside forests for the benefit of livelihoods and the ecosystem.

The Government of Uttar Pradesh and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)  announced an initiative in the state to support the global goals to combat climate change and its impact by increasing tree coverage outside the forest.Under the joint initiative, Uttar Pradesh- Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department and USAID launched the “Trees Outside Forests in India (TOFI)” program in the state.

TOFI will bring together farmers, companies, and other private institutions to rapidly expand tree coverage outside of traditional forests in the state. The new initiative is designed to enhance carbon sequestration, support local communities and strengthen the climate resilience of agriculture, thereby supporting global climate change mitigation and adaptation goals, according to a  statement released by USAID.
