India's Supreme Court upholds Centre's 2016 demonetization decision

Demonetisation was announced by the government to promote digital payments and curb black money tradings in the country.

The Indian Supreme Court constitution bench consisting of five judges on January 2, 2022, upheld the validity of Centre's November 2016 decision to demonetise ₹500 and ₹1,000 currency notes.

The bench headed by Justice SA Nazeer and comprising Justices BR Gavai, AS Bopanna, V Ramasubramanian, and BV Nagarathna passed the ruling with a 4-1 majority.
