Fake call centers and thugs involved in phishing and other dubious internet operations out of India have cost American citizens more than US$ 10 billion in 2022 or an increase of 47 per cent over the previous year according to a report in The Times of India. The frauds that gullible Americans fell for included romance related and technical support. With most victims in the age group of 60 years and above, frauds relating to romance and tech support alone accounted for US$ 3 billions in the last two years. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is working closely with India’s Central Bureau of Investigation, New Delhi police and Interpol to break up the gangs and freeze assets.
