Construction of the Parliament House began in 1921 under British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker and was completed six years later. Initially called the Council House, the building was the base of the Imperial Legislative Council.

A 6.5-metre high bronze statue of the Ashoka Pillar, the national emblem of India was unveiled by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the roof of the new Parliament Building on July 11, 2022

The Parliament house is unique amongst the colonial buildings of New Delhi, as it was constructed specifically with Indian participation in mind. The creation of  a bicameral legislature under the Government of India Act 1919 necessitated the construction of the Sansad Bhavan for the two houses of Parliament.
