The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated in the Lok Sabha that over a 160 thousand people gave up citizenship in India in the year 2021. This information was presented by the Union minister of state (MoS) of home affairs Nityanand Rai. in reply to an enquiry by Haji Fazlur Rehman, a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Member of Parliament (MP), who sought details of the number of emigrants from India from the year 2019 till date, the reasons they cited for their decision, as well as the countries which they moved to.
The data released has revealed a major increase in the number of citizenship renunciations in 2021, the highest in five years. This is in contrast to 2020, where numbers had fallen to just 85,248.
