University of Queensland researchers discover healing power of cells

The study focused on an E. coli strain that accounts for around 80% of urinary tract infections and is a frequent cause of sepsis.

Researchers from the University of Queensland discovered a mechanism in cells that could be utilised to alter the body's immune system to tackle both chronic inflammatory and viral disorders.

Dr Kaustav Das Gupta and professor Matt Sweet from the University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience revealed that a protein generated from glucose in immune cells can both inhibit bacteria from multiplying and decrease inflammatory reactions.
