The United Nations and challenges of World Order

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, is due to address the General Assembly on Wednesday and is expected to touch upon three themes— combatting food insecurity, global health security and upholding the Charter of the United Nations

The 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly has started in New York with the high profile and intense debates and speeches set to start on Tuesday, Sept. 20( American East Coast Time) and lasting for about ten days. It is the usual hectic period in the world body’s time frame and especially so this year when the meeting is taking place in a physical sense which in 2020 and 2021 had to be on the virtual mode because of the coronavirus.

In June 1945 fifty one countries got together to form the United Nations that came into force by October that year; and today there are 193 member countries all officially pledging to uphold the Charter of an Organisation that has prevention and elimination of conflict as its prime objectives.“ To save succeeding generations from the scourge of war” says the Preamble of the Charter and whose founding members were very much concerned given that they went through the horrors of the first two world wars.
