Martinez city council, California, unanimously appointed Satinder S Malhi as its first Indian American Sikh council member representing the District 3 constituency.

Malhi takes over in place of Brianne Zorn, who was elected as the city's first female Mayor. The swearing-in of Mayor Zorn left a seat vacant on the City Council, which Malhi was appointed to fill, a news release stated.
