Photo feature: Thousands evacuated as river Yamuna flows above danger marks in Delhi

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said widespread rainfall "with isolated heavy falls" over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand over the last few days contributed to the rise in level of water in river Yamuna

The Yamuna river in Delhi breached the danger mark of 205.33 metres on Friday which led the authorities to evacuate around 7,000 people from low-lying areas. Anil Banka, East Delhi District Magistrate said, "on Tuesday morning evacuation alert was issued and around 14000 residents have been evacuated so far."

According to an official, approximately 35000 people reside in the low-lying areas of Delhi who are vulnerable to flooding. Most of them are staying near river banks in Jhuggi Jhopri (slums JJ clusters) and have been shifted to safe places in nearby community centers and makeshift shelters.
