Renowned educator and social worker, Ela Bhatt, passed away in Ahemdabad on Thursday as a result of age-related problems. The 89-year-old Padma Bhushan awardee was popularly known as the “gentle revolutionary” for empowering millions of women.
A strong believer of the Gandhian principles, Bhatt championed the rights of women not only in her country but around the world. She believed that women should be self reliant and founded Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), a union that represents and collaborates with a million rural, self-employed working women.
