NYC Mayor inaugurates Indian Diwali festival celebrations at Times Square

The mayor had also recently announced making Diwali a public holiday in New York City starting in 2023.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams officially inaugurated Diwali celebrations in Times Square on October 15. The Indian Festival of Light, Deepavali, falls on October 24 this year, but festivities began in Times Square a week earlier.

Along with hundreds of members of the Indian American community, the event was attended by Mayor Eric Adams, Senator Charles E. Schumer, India's Consul General in New York, Randhir Jaiswal, NY State Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar, and Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine.
