Indian American AI pioneer Soumith Chintala to leave Meta
Chintala, the co-founder of PyTorch, is an alumnus of the Vellore Institute of Technology.

Indian origin AI pioneer Soumith Chintala has announced his departure from Global tech behemoth Meta. Chintala announced that he will be departing from the company on Nov. 17, after a 11 year association with the company.
Having spent nearly all his professional career at Meta's AI system PyTorch, Chintala penned a heart-warming post about the transition and about what lies ahead for him. “I’m stepping down from PyTorch and leaving Meta on November 17th, " he announced on X.
Chintala co-founded PyTorch for Meta and now his creation is used at “virtually every major AI company,” and even taught at all major classrooms, from MIT to rural India. PyTorch is an open source deep learning framework built to be flexible and modular for research, with the stability and support needed for production deployment.
Talking about "one of the hardest decisions of his life," he said, “Eleven years at Meta. Nearly all my professional life. Making many friends for life. Almost eight years leading PyTorch, taking it from nothing to 90%+ adoption in AI.”
Describing the next step in his journey, Chintala said, "Something small. Something new. Something I don't fully understand yet. Something uncomfortable. I could have moved to something else inside Meta. But I needed to know what's out there. I needed to do something small again. I couldn't live with the counterfactual regret of never trying something outside Meta."
Chintala noted that the decision is well thought of and has been coming for more than an year. He had started toying with the idea since his daughter's birth, an year ago, and has finally reached a position where he can comfortably walk away as his team is ready to face the challenges that lie ahead without having to lean back on him.
Chintala holds a bachelors' degree from the Vellore Institute of Technology and a Masters' degree from New York University
