Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal introduced legislation that would require employers to pay eligible workers double their regular wage for overtime hours, replacing the current federal requirement of time-and-a-half pay.

The measure, known as the Double the Wage for Overtime Act, was unveiled alongsideRep. Greg Casar, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, as part of a broader push to increase wages for workers putting in long hours.

Announcing the bill on X , Jayapal wrote: "Workers deserve fair pay. Let's get this passed!"

In a video accompanying the post, Jayapal said the legislation would change federal law, which currently guarantees workers overtime pay at one-and-a-half times their regular rate.

"This is what workers need to get paid fairly, and we are so excited to introduce this and ultimately to get it passed into law," she said.

According to the bill's sponsors, the legislation would be the first increase in the federal overtime premium since the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act were established.
