Indian origin Democratic lawmaker Ro Khanna has decried U.S. President Donald Trump's latest threat to pause all immigration from third-world countries and described it as a "casual rant on social media" that will have devastating consequences.

Trump, on Nov. 28, had posted on his social media account that he will halt all immigration from "third-world" countries till the time he removes "anyone who is not an asset to the countries, including those permitted by the former president Joe Biden's administration.

Reacting to this, Khanna noted that Trump's social media post is devastating to millions of hard working, law abiding immigrant families who are reaching out scared.

Khanna also took offence to Trump's use of the phrase "third world countries." He noted that the term is outdated and the policy takes the country back to a "pre 1965 America where immigration from nations like India was several restricted."

He added, "My parents would not have been welcome."

The Indian origin lawmaker also noted that the policy is "callous & frightening," considering how hard immigrant families had to work to earn their citizenship.

He appealed, "We must stand up for the contributions immigrants make to America."
