Labour councillor, Hina Mir, from west London has been fined USD 53,384 (£40,000) for illegally employing an Indian student as a full-time nanny after a UK court upheld an immigration ruling against her, as per The Telegraph.
The victim, Himanshi Gongley, was found by authorities after she flagged down a police car in August 2024, she was described by the authorities as being "distressed". Gongley alleged that she was “physically abused” and felt “suicidal” at Mir’s home.

Gongley was in the UK illegally and Mir, a 45-year-old politician, a qualified solicitor and the former deputy mayor of Hounslow, was found to have hired Gongley for approximately $1,600 (£1,200) a month in cash, despite the student having no legal right to work in the UK, after her Visa expired in 2023.
Mir claimed that the student was a "social visitor" who often stopped by to “play video games, to watch TV and to chill” and occasionally help with household chores.
Mir had challenged a ruling by immigration authorities in court but the court upheld the £40,000 fine and added £3,620 in court costs.
