Indian origin YouTube CEO Neal Mohan has been named CEO of the Year by TIME.

52-year-old Mohan became CEO of the social media and online video sharing platform in 2023, after taking over from Susan Wojcicki, a man who is often described as Mohan's guru.

Announcing his name, TIME described him as "quiet-spoken, deliberative, hard to ruffle." They added, "He likes watching sports, going to his daughters’ dance recitals, and open white shirts, just normal stuff. His favorite candy is the not-very-exciting Butterfinger. If you ask him to be in your YouTube video, he’ll probably do it."

Neal Mohan became a part of Google, YouTube's parent company, in 2008. Before becoming the CEO, he was the chief product officer of the company. He also serves on the Board of Starbucks since early 2024.

Talking to TIME about YouTube, Mohan said, “YouTube today is like a metropolis with lots of interconnected dependencies, and what you do on one street impacts what happens on another street.”

He added, “In the early days, it was much more like a village, where lots of the creators knew each other. And I think that if you’re the leader of one vs. the other, you’re forced to think about decisions in maybe a different way.”

Neal Mohan was born in Lafayette, Indiana, and spent most of his early childhood in the United States before relocating with his parents to Lucknow, India, in 1985 at age 12.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1996 and later returned to Stanford to complete his MBA in 2005, graduating as an Arjay Miller Scholar.
