Indian American physician and educator Gautam J. Desai reflected on  his historic term as president of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) as his tenure came to an end.

Desai was the first Indian American to serve in the role, said, "I hope those who are Indian American see someone in a leadership position and feel motivated to pursue opportunities for themselves.”

"I think it also shows people from underrepresented backgrounds that leadership doesn't have to look the same way it has in the past,” he added.

Desai, who serves as chair and professor of primary care at Kansas City University (KCU), concluded his one-year presidency during the ACOFP's 75th anniversary year. In the role, he represented family physicians, medical residents and students across the United States while advocating for the profession at the national level.

Born in India and later pursuing a career in the United States, Desai described mentorship and leadership development as key priorities during his tenure. Under his leadership, the organization expanded efforts to encourage students to pursue careers in family medicine and developed programs aimed at preparing future healthcare leaders.

One such initiative was OsteoBridge, a mentorship program that connects aspiring osteopathic family physicians with experienced practitioners from diverse professional backgrounds. The program seeks to help students build professional networks, strengthen leadership skills and prepare for residency training.

Desai also promoted the Family Physicians DO More campaign, an initiative designed to showcase the wide range of career opportunities available in osteopathic family medicine. The program provides educational resources, physician profiles and career guidance for students interested in the field.

"We're hoping that when students learn the value of mentorship in osteopathic family medicine, it helps them succeed and inspires them help the next generation," he said. "It's a great field because sometimes you can take care of a whole generation of family members, from infants to grandparents, which is super rewarding."

A longtime educator, Desai said his experiences working in global health programs have shaped his leadership philosophy, emphasizing listening, collaboration and cultural understanding. He believes those principles are essential not only in patient care but also in medical education and organizational leadership.

Desai's presidency capped more than 15 years of service within ACOFP, including leadership roles on committees and the organization's board of governors.

Although his presidential term has ended, Desai will continue serving on the ACOFP executive committee and the Leadership Development Committee, where he plans to focus on mentoring future physician leaders and strengthening opportunities for the next generation of healthcare professionals.
