PM Modi and Sonia Gandhi pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shashtri

Gandhi's birthday is also observed as the International Day of Non-Violence, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2007

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at the memorial in Rajghat and central hall of the Parliament House in New Delhi on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti (birth anniversary) on Sunday Oct. 02, 2022.  

"This Gandhi Jayanti is even more special because India is marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. May we always live up to Bapu’s ideals. I also urge you all to purchase Khadi and handicrafts products as a tribute to Gandhi,” the Prime Minister said.

President Droupadi Murmu also adressed the nation n the eve of Gandhi Jayanti saying, "it is an occasion for all to rededicate themselves to the values of peace, equality, and communal harmony. She also paid tribute to Mahatma at Rajghat today."

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge were also present at Rajghat to pay their respects.

Lok Sabha (Lower House) Speaker, Om Birla, Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, senior Congress leader, Mallikarjun Kharge and other Parliamenterians also participated in the function to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shashtri on their birth anniversaries at the Central Hall of the Parliament House.
