Kshama Sawant proposes anti-caste discrimination laws in Seattle

Sawant is the city’s only Indian American council member and a socialist who recently announced she will leave the council when her term expires at the end of the year.

Kshama Sawant, a member of Seattle's city council in the United States, introduced a draft law barring caste discrimination on January 24.

‌‌If passed by the city council, this ordinance will be the first of its kind in the United States, and it will create a key precedent in recognising caste as a discriminatory system in a country with a large Indian diaspora.
