Indian platoon of female troops sent to UN mission in Abyei

The Indian contingent, made up of two officers and 25 additional officers of other ranks, will focus on community outreach in addition to doing many security-related tasks.

The largest single unit of female Blue Helmets from India to serve in a United Nation mission (UNISFA) since 2007 was deployed on January 6, 2023, to Abyei, a conflict-prone area that lies between Sudan and South Sudan, which has seen a recent rise in clashes.

While the deployment maintains  the country's reputation as one of the largest troop contributors to UN peacekeeping missions around the world, it also signals its intention to dramatically increase the proportion of women in peacekeeping contingents.
