The largest single unit of female Blue Helmets from India to serve in a United Nation mission (UNISFA) since 2007 was deployed on January 6, 2023, to Abyei, a conflict-prone area that lies between Sudan and South Sudan, which has seen a recent rise in clashes.
While the deployment maintains the country's reputation as one of the largest troop contributors to UN peacekeeping missions around the world, it also signals its intention to dramatically increase the proportion of women in peacekeeping contingents.
