Indian American footballer Mia Bhuta gifts souvenirs to Indian players, speaks of her Indian roots

“Indian culture has had a real influence on me and my life,” the 16-year-old midfielder said.

Indian origin footballer Mia Bhuta, the first player of Indian heritage to represent the US at a World Cup, played and scored in the opening match of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup against India, at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

The US midfielder’s father, who cheered get on from the stands, was born in Mumbai and grew up in Rajkot. He immigrated to the States when he was 16, as he was a keen tennis player and wanted to get better coaching.
