Though India commenced its FIH Hockey World Cup campaign with a resounding win against South Africa with 5-1, the team failed to end its four-decade-long dry run in the event.

The Indian team had last tasted success in the 1975 World Cup when it defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in the finals and after this, the team even failed to make it to the semifinals of the event. Once again they failed to qualify for the quarterfinals after losing to New Zealand in a penalty shootout on Jan 22, 2023.
