India signed a "Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement" (MMPA) with Austria on Jan.2, 2023 during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's visit to Vienna. This comes after similar mobility agreements were signed with France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Finland.

While India is eager to complete these agreements with European nations as a first step toward resolving issues with the long-delayed India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement and to facilitate Indian professionals working in these nations, the European nations see them as a means of reducing illegal immigration from India.
